For people who fancy something daring, different and full of depth.
Hatters Smoked Orange Gin was made for The Cracked Actor, the much-missed speakeasy on Stockport’s Underbanks. Its old-world atmosphere called for a gin with more intrigue: the core Hatters botanicals, extra orange peel and a slow curl of oak smoke.
Before maceration, the botanicals are cold oak-smoked for 12 hours, then rested in the base grain spirit for 24 hours to draw out that smoky-citrus character.
Nose: Orange zest and smouldering oak, with pine resin, warm spice and a faint suggestion of bonfire smoke.
Palate: Bright orange peel cuts through first, followed by warming juniper, cardamom and a rounded, dry smokiness.
Finish: Long, aromatic and gently smoky, with bitter orange and peppery spice staying the course.
Serve: Pour over ice with a Mediterranean tonic and an orange wheel. For the braver drinker, make a smoky Negroni with a strip of flamed orange peel.
Use a big copa or balloon glass. Twist the orange peel over the empty glass to scent it, then add gin and plenty of ice. Top with tonic in a slow pour and give the glass one deliberate lift—enough to marry it, not enough to lose the smoke.
